Volcker: Taxes likely to rise eventually to tame deficit
According to Steven C. Johnson and Leah Schnurr at reuters.com:
The United States should consider raising taxes to help bring deficits under control and may need to consider a European-style value-added tax, White House adviser Paul Volcker said on Tuesday.
Volcker, answering a question from the audience at a New York Historical Society event, said the value-added tax "was not as toxic an idea" as it has been in the past and also said a carbon or other energy-related tax may become necessary.
Though he acknowledged that both were still unpopular ideas, he said getting entitlement costs and the U.S. budget deficit under control may require such moves. "If at the end of the day we need to raise taxes, we should raise taxes," he said.

'If at the End of the Day We Need to Raise Taxes, We Should Raise Taxes'
According to jammiewearingfool.blogspot.com:
They'd like to raise taxes at the beginning, middle and end of every day, except they're anathema to the public. But hey, if they're willing to further compound their misery and ensure electoral disaster this November, this is a good way to start.

I'd like to see a poll to see how toxic a VAT would be, not to mention a carbon tax.
These people really need a good smackdown come November. Which is probably why they're in such bad shape they think running against Bush is a marketable strategy.

According to Gregory of Yardale at moonbattery.com:
So, a private airline (Spirit Airlines*) decides to charge people for carry-on baggage... a charge that can be avoided by taking a different airline... and people are "up in arms" about it.
But, the Obama administration considers a value-added-tax that will add to the cost of everything in existence and cannot be avoided, simply to pay for his administration's voracious appetite for creating new entitlements and bureaucracies... and everybody is okay with that?

I think this VAT Tax combined with the soon to be announced Energy Tax will cause a REVOLUTION in our country. American's are NOT Europeans, and we will not allow the leaders of our Great Nation to destroy it. . . .We will FIGHT back.

*Spirit Airlines - The low-fare carrier on Tuesday became the first U.S. airline to announce it will charge for stowing bags in overhead bins. Starting this summer, prices will range from $20 for members of Spirit's $9 fare club to $45 for last-minute fliers who don't book a $30 carry-on fee in advance online. Items that can be stowed beneath seats will remain free.
