New Mobile Van Security X-Ray Technology Raises Privacy Questions

Modern technology may be working to keep us safe, but many wonder where the line between safety and privacy lands these days. New technology allows airport security screeners to peak under your clothes and the same x-ray technology is being used by new roving vehicles looking through the exteriors of vehicles and buildings. American Science & Engineering, a company based in Billerica, Mass., has reportedly sold U.S. and foreign government agencies hundreds of these backscatter x-ray scanners mounted in mobile vans.
While the biggest buyer of AS&E’s machines over the last seven years has been the Department of Defense for security operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, Joe Reiss, the company’s vice president of marketing, reports to Forbes that law enforcement agencies have also used the vehicles to investigate terrorist threats within the U.S.
This type of technology is far more advanced than anything that George Orwell was thinking when he wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four back in 1949. . . ."Big Brother" is really watching you now. . . . .
Here's a few examples that was on the Glenn Beck program this week:
This "new" legislation would NOT require a search warrant or have to get get signed off by a judge:
1) The government can attach a GPS to your car to track your every move
2) They can use your Cell Phone to track your location
3) Feds pushing for backdoors to internet encryption. . . .Internet, Email, instant messaging, etc.
. . . .also the Department of Homeland Security is buying and using Predator Drones for surveillance within the United States.
Remember when the left was all up in arms over the "Patriot Act" that was passed after 9/11, which basically intercepted cell phone calls from outside the US. This new "x-ray" technology is far more advanced than what was conceived even back in 2001. In the right hands these "new" laws will go after the terrorist and could possibly prevent another terrorist attack, but can you imagine the horror if this technology gets into the wrong hands?
What has happend to our "Fourth Amendment rights" which guards against unreasonable searches and seizures? The amendment specifically requires search and arrest warrants be judicially sanctioned and supported by probable cause.
As I have previously wrote in this blog the US Census has GPS coordinates within 40 feet of your front door, so now the government knows exactly who and how many people are supposed to be in your residence. So what if they drive the "x-ray" van by your home and there are 25 people in your residence? Are you having a birthday party or a political gathering to overthrow the government?
Do you really want a van that can drive past your house and tell exactly how many people are inside, if you have a couple of shot guns in your closet or see that your trunk is filled with Christmas packages all without a warrant or any judicial oversight? When smaller versions are available will this technology be available to the local police?
Just look how innocent technology has encroached upon our freedoms. . . .Cities are now using "google earth" to see if you have an illegal shed or swimming pool in your back yard. All new cars are equipped with "black boxes" that record performance data, but this information can be used in court against you. It always begins innocent enough doesn’t it? Some new invention that will provide a "benefit" to society, but then it can easily be twisted to serve the needs of the govenment.
I have nothing to hide, but the government has no right to look without probable cause. Some people will say concerning privacy issues: "Well if you’re not doing anything wrong - then what's the problem" . . . .Here's the way I look at it - If they are watching "ME" today. . . .tomorrow they'll be watching "YOU". . .
Can you imagine if the Germans had had this technology in WWII. . . .A lot more Jewish families would have been eliminated.

Kuper said the boat, which set sail from northern Cyprus flying a British flag, won't resist if Israeli authorities try to stop it.
The trip came nearly four months after Israeli commandos boarded a flotilla of Gaza-bound ships, killing nine activists. The voyage also came as Israelis, Palestinians and U.S. mediators sought a compromise that would allow Mideast talks to continue after an Israeli settlement slowdown expires at midnight.
Boat passenger Rami Elhanan, an Israeli whose daughter Smadar was killed in a suicide bombing at a shopping mall in Jerusalem in 1997, said it was his "moral duty" to act in support of Palestinians in Gaza because reconciliation was the surest path to peace.
"Those 1.5 million people in Gaza are victims exactly as I am," Elhanan, 60, said in an interview.
Other voyage organizers included the group European Jews for a Just Peace and the U.S.-based Jewish Voice for Peace.
The 33-foot (10-meter) catamaran Irene, carrying a total of nine passengers and crew members, set sail from the Turkish Cypriot north of the island because the Greek Cypriot south imposed a ban on all-Gaza-bound vessels in May, citing "vital interests."
Prior to the ban, international activists had used south Cyprus to launch eight boat trips to Gaza, a coastal strip seized by the Islamic militant group Hamas three years ago.
On May 31, eight pro-Palestinian Turkish activists and a Turkish American died when Israeli naval commandos boarded a flotilla of Gaza-bound ships.
The Irene boat planned to deliver children's toys, medical equipment, outboard motors for fishing boats and books to Gaza residents.
Kuper said the voyage is a "symbolic statement" intended to show that not all Jews support Israeli policies toward Palestinians and to underscore what he called Israel's "illegal, unnecessary and inhumane" blockade of Gaza.
"Jewish communities around the world are not united in support of Israel," Kuper said in a telephone interview from London. "Israel's future peace is coming to terms quickly with the Palestinians."

While the news broke this week that the National Bureau of Economic Research proclaimed the recession ended in June 2009, it unleashed a guffaw that could be heard from coast-to-coast. Truth is, those guys really don’t have a clue. Sorry dudes, but we here at WalletPop are on the front lines of the recession and no offense to your lofty perches, but you really need to come down now.

Expiring tax cuts hit taxpayers at every level. . . .

WASHINGTON — Here's some pressure for lawmakers: If they don't reach agreement on extending soon-to-expire Bush-era tax cuts, nearly all their constituents back home will get big tax increases.
A typical family of four with a household income of $50,000 a year would have to pay $2,900 more in taxes in 2011, according to a new analysis by Deloitte Tax LLP, a tax consulting firm. The same family making $100,000 a year would see its taxes rise by $4,500.
Wealthier families face even bigger tax hikes. A family of four making $500,000 a year would pay $10,800 more in taxes. The same family making $1 million a year would get a tax increase of $52,300.
The estimates are based on total household income, including wages, capital gains and qualified dividends. The estimated tax bills take into account typical deductions at each income level.
Democrats have been arguing for much of the past decade that tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 under former President George W. Bush provided a windfall for the wealthy. That's true, but they also reduced taxes for the working poor, the middle class, and just about everyone in between.
Those tax cuts expire at the end of the year, setting the stage for a high-stakes debate just before congressional elections in November. If Congress fails to act, families at every income level will see more taxes being withheld from their paychecks come January.
The tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 reduced marginal income tax rates at every level. They also provided a wide range of income tax breaks for education, families with children and married couples.
Taxes on capital gains and dividends were reduced, while the federal estate tax was gradually repealed, though only for this year.
President Barack Obama wants to extend the tax cuts for individuals making more than $200,000 and joint filers making more than $250,000 in adjusted gross income. That's income from wages, capital gains and dividends, before standard deductions and exemptions are subtracted.
Republicans and a growing number of Democrats in Congress want to extend all the tax cuts, at least temporarily.
On Thursday, House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio said he wants an up-or-down vote on extending all the tax cuts before congressional elections in November.
"Raising taxes on anyone, especially small businesses, is the wrong thing to do in a struggling economy," Boehner said. "On the issue of job killing tax hikes the American people are not going to accept anything less than the vote that they deserve." . . . .

WASHINGTON — Here's some pressure for lawmakers: If they don't reach agreement on extending soon-to-expire Bush-era tax cuts, nearly all their constituents back home will get big tax increases.
A typical family of four with a household income of $50,000 a year would have to pay $2,900 more in taxes in 2011, according to a new analysis by Deloitte Tax LLP, a tax consulting firm. The same family making $100,000 a year would see its taxes rise by $4,500.
Wealthier families face even bigger tax hikes. A family of four making $500,000 a year would pay $10,800 more in taxes. The same family making $1 million a year would get a tax increase of $52,300.
The estimates are based on total household income, including wages, capital gains and qualified dividends. The estimated tax bills take into account typical deductions at each income level.
Democrats have been arguing for much of the past decade that tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 under former President George W. Bush provided a windfall for the wealthy. That's true, but they also reduced taxes for the working poor, the middle class, and just about everyone in between.
Those tax cuts expire at the end of the year, setting the stage for a high-stakes debate just before congressional elections in November. If Congress fails to act, families at every income level will see more taxes being withheld from their paychecks come January.
The tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 reduced marginal income tax rates at every level. They also provided a wide range of income tax breaks for education, families with children and married couples.
Taxes on capital gains and dividends were reduced, while the federal estate tax was gradually repealed, though only for this year.
President Barack Obama wants to extend the tax cuts for individuals making more than $200,000 and joint filers making more than $250,000 in adjusted gross income. That's income from wages, capital gains and dividends, before standard deductions and exemptions are subtracted.
Republicans and a growing number of Democrats in Congress want to extend all the tax cuts, at least temporarily.
On Thursday, House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio said he wants an up-or-down vote on extending all the tax cuts before congressional elections in November.
"Raising taxes on anyone, especially small businesses, is the wrong thing to do in a struggling economy," Boehner said. "On the issue of job killing tax hikes the American people are not going to accept anything less than the vote that they deserve." . . . .

Even Cuba Turns Away From Socialism

There was a chemistry professor in a large college that had some exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in the lab, the Prof noticed one young man, an exchange student, who kept rubbing his back and stretching as if his back hurt.
The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new communist regime.
In the midst of his story, he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked: "Do you know how to catch wild pigs?"
The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said that it was no joke.
"You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put
a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming.
When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side.

The Council announced Tuesday that it has invited local imams to perform Islamic invocations at the beginning of the Council meetings in September.
Though meetings don't regularly begin with any form of prayer, an email from the Common Council called it "an act of solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters."
The email even referenced the ongoing issue in New York. "One of the goals of the Council is to give a voice to the many diverse peoples of the City, which is especially important given the recent anti-Islam events throughout the country."
Diversity only matters so long as there's no diversity of thought.

Here's the idea: If authorities pull someone over for a traffic stop and discover they are in the country illegally, authorities would be forced to let the illegal immigrant go without calling federal agents unless the individual is a convicted felon.
Even officers opposed to SB 1070 say this would set a bad precedent.
Sheriff Tony Estrada of Santa Cruz County says nothing in southern Arizona would change if the detention policy changed. He says that's because his deputies turn these kinds of cases over to Border Patrol anyway.
Just as some of the debate swirling around Arizona's new immigration law began to cool off, a possible new Immigration and Customs Enforcement policy has some mad hot.
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu is very upset about possible policy changes to ICE that read in part, "Immigration officers should not issue detainers against an alien charged only with a traffic-related misdemeanor unless or until the alien is convicted."
Babeu said "now it appears what they have in some draft policies and their proposal is to water down any strength in the federal law whatsoever and this is clearly in direct opposition of what the people really want."
Even Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada, who leaned strongly against SB 1070, thinks this sort of federal policy change is suspect. "It is surprising they would make that decision. I would suspect once an individual is identified as being here illegally, some process would kick in...that would deport that person," he said.
Ariz. Sen. Jon Kyl weighed in, along with Texas Sen. John Cornyn, writing this to Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano:
"Based on our review of these memos, we are concerned that these new policies would circumvent, rather than promote the enforcement of, immigration laws pertaining to illegal aliens."

A jobless couple rake in £95,000 (145,584 USD) in state benefits a year — and even have breakfast delivered to the door each morning, courtesy of the taxpayer.
The money — five times the starting salary of a teacher — goes to unemployed Pete and Sam Smith and their ten children, who live in a rentfree four-bedroom house.
After trashing their last house, the Smiths were moved to a large £1,000-week house last month. The new accommodations do not meet with their requirements:
Mrs Smith, 36, complained that the house was too small, the breakfast portions too stingy and said she could afford to buy her brood only one Nintendo Wii games console between them.
She claims she is also forced to pay £100 a week to keep her five cats in a cattery.
'It's very cramped here,' she told the News of the World. 'We've been told we might not be given a new house for another nine months, which is ridiculous.
'The breakfast supplied by the council isn't like proper hot food. It's usually eggs, beans, tinned tomatoes and cereal, which isn't really enough for us all and we have to heat it up ourselves.'
The Smiths haven't worked since the mister resigned from the Army in 2001. Why would they? In a country run by progressives, not working is far more remunerative.
The total with child benefits is £44,954. They then receive a £950-aweek bed-and-breakfast deal where the council pays for breakfasts delivered to their home, which comes to £49,400 — a total of £94,354 a year.
In exchange, taxpayers don't even get gratitude. Welfare parasites are like Muslims, race grievance mongers, and all the rest of the opportunistic vermin that thrive under liberalism — the more you give them, the more strident their indignant demands.
